Fair usage

Fair usage policy

Monthly support is designed for ongoing maintenance – not as a development retainer. Maintenance plans cover the regular, recurring work needed to keep your existing site healthy, secure, and up to date. They are not designed for high-volume content production, large-scale redesign work, or intensive custom development.

If your edit requests consistently exceed 3 hours of engineer time per month, we will notify you proactively and have an honest conversation about whether a plan upgrade, a one-off development quote, or a separate retainer arrangement better fits your needs going forward.

We will never start work that would incur additional charges without your explicit written approval first. No exceptions.

What this looks like in practice: the vast majority of clients never come anywhere near this limit. A text edit takes around 10 minutes. An image swap takes around 5. A form field change takes 15. This policy exists to protect everyone from sustained misuse of the plan – not to restrict normal, reasonable use. When in doubt, submit the request and ask. We will tell you honestly whether it is included or whether it needs a separate quote before any work begins.

How to think about ongoing support vs new development

Your maintenance plan covers everything needed to keep your existing site healthy, secure, performant, and up to date. It is not a development retainer, a design subscription, or an unlimited content service. Understanding this distinction makes the relationship cleaner and more productive for both sides.

When a request comes in, we ask a simple question: is this changing something that already exists, or is it building something new? The answer determines whether it is included or quoted. Here are the rules we use:

  • If it is changing or updating something that already exists on your site, it is almost certainly included.
  • If it is building something that does not yet exist on your site, it is almost certainly quoted separately.
  • If it requires custom code, a new plugin install, or more than a couple of hours to complete, it will be scoped and priced before we start.
  • If it involves design decisions beyond minor tweaks to the existing look and feel, it falls outside maintenance scope.
  • If you are not sure which category your request falls into, submit it and ask. We will tell you honestly before any work begins.
  • We will never start work that would incur extra charges without your explicit approval. This is a firm commitment, not a guideline.

Still not sure where your request fits?

Send it through. We will confirm whether it is included or provide a quote before any extra work begins - no obligation and no surprises.
